Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Explain the neurological mechanisms of NREM and REM sleep and mechanisms of wake- and sleep-promoting medications
  • Discuss the main symptoms, treatment and follow up for pediatric narcolepsy with a special emphasis on quality measures
  • Explore the transition from training in sleep medicine to practicing sleep medicine
  • Distinguish between the different devices and modalities of positive airway pressure (PAP) including CPAP, APAP, ASV, BPAP, S/T, AVAPS, iVAPS
  • Explore novel ideas beyond medication, light therapy and exercise, to improve sleep quality
  • Discuss cases where sleep disorders were used as a criminal defense
  • Summarize how the AASM creates their practice guidelines/parameters
