Exploring Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation: An Innovation in Sleep Apnea Treatment
Description
Tolerance and adherence to positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy remains to be a challenge for some patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).  It is estimated that about half of the patients with OSA have poor long-term adherence to PAP therapy.  This webinar sponsored by the Sleep Technologist and Respiratory Therapist Education Committee focuses on hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) as an option for patients who struggle with PAP therapy. The discussion includes different aspects of this form of neuromodulation therapy: patient selection, surgical evaluation and implantation, device activation and follow-up, and HGNS titration sleep study.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  1. Know how hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) therapy works
  2. Understand the indications and contraindications for HNS therapy
  3. Outline the clinical pathway for HNS therapy
  4. Discuss HNS surgical evaluation and implant surgery
  5. Review the principles of HNS therapy titration in the sleep lab
  6. Discuss post-implant/long-term follow-up of patients
