Description
A discussion regarding several AI tools that are currently used across Sleep Medicine to educate/inform webinar attendees on concrete examples of machine learning use in their respective environments (medical practices, sleep labs, etc).
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Broadly describe current applications of AI in sleep medicine Highlight specific tools that can benefit the most clinicians.
  • Highlight specific tools that can benefit the most clinicians.

M. Brandon Westover, MD, PhD

M. Brandon Westover, MD, PhD is Associate Professor in the Dept. of Neurology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Director of Data Sciences, McCance Center for Brain Health, Massachusetts General Hospital. He obtained his PhD in Physics working in the field of information theory. He is a board-certified practicing Neurologist and Clinical Neurophysiologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and previously in Massachusetts General Hosptial (MGH). He directed the MGH Critical Care EEG Monitoring Service and serves as the Director of Data Science at the McCance Center for Brain Health. His group develops machine learning / AI approaches to improve medical care for patients with neurological conditions including sleep disorders, anoxic brain injury, seizures, cerebral ischemia, and delirium. He co-founded Beacon Biosignals.

Emmanuel Mignot, MD, PhD

Dr. Mignot is Craig Reynolds Professor of Sleep Medicine at Stanford University.  He discovered that human narcolepsy is caused by the autoimmune loss of ~70,000 hypothalamic neurons secreting the wake-promoting peptide hypocretin/orexin.  He identified HLA-DQB1*06:02 and T-Cell receptor genes as major susceptibility genes across ethnic groups, which act together to promote a highly selective T cell mediated autoimmune process triggered by influenza infection. Dr. Mignot has received numerous awards including the 2023 Breakthrough Prize.  He is a member of the National Academies of Sciences and Medicine. He works on many aspects of sleep research and on unravelling the etiologies of various autoimmune diseases affecting the brain. His approaches are strongly analytic, and include genetics, proteomics, statistics, and deep learning.
