Pdf Summary
The 2019 AASM Member Survey was conducted through online surveys and included both individual and facilities members of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The survey was open from April 17 to May 6, 2019 for individual members and from May 10 to June 4, 2019 for facilities members.

The survey had a completion rate of 15% for individual members and 17% for facilities members, with a total of 1,093 individual members and 375 facilities members completing the survey. Only completed responses were included in the analysis.

The majority of participants in the survey were physicians, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total respondents. In terms of work settings, 43% of individual members were from academic hospitals or health systems, followed by 25% from nonacademic hospitals or health systems.

The top work-related areas of concern for individual members were prior authorization requirements and declining reimbursement. For facilities members, the top concerns were insurance policies inconsistent with AASM practice standards, declining reimbursement, and prior authorization requirements.

Wait times for new patients varied, with 42% of individual members reporting wait times of three weeks or fewer and the remainder reporting longer wait times.

The top career goals identified by participants across all categories were helping their patients and staying up-to-date on the latest issues in sleep medicine. Financial goals and advancement goals were less common.

The majority of participants have been AASM members for 7 years or more, with 40% of individual members being members for more than 10 years. The top reasons for joining and renewing membership were to stay current with knowledge and developments in sleep medicine and to meet and network with others in the field.

Participants expressed satisfaction with certain member benefits, such as the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine and the Sleep journal, but there were some areas for improvement, particularly in opportunities for free continuing education and support for the field of sleep medicine.

Overall, the survey provided insights into the demographics, concerns, and priorities of AASM members, helping to inform the organization about areas where improvements can be made to better serve its members.
